BSkyB fights on for £7.8bn takeover

Pay-TV company BSkyB says its 24-hour channel Sky News is editorially independent and should not complicate News Corp's proposed £7.8bn takeover bid.

News Corp, run by Rupert Murdoch, wants to buy the 61 per cent of BSkyB it does not own. The fact the US media giant also owns a number of national British newspapers has sparked an investigation by communications regulator Ofcom.

In a submission to Ofcom, BSkyB said Sky News would remain independent after a buyout and the regulator should not impose conditions restricting its options because of the news channel.

By buying all of BSkyB, News Corp wants to consolidate the satellite broadcaster's strong cash flows.
