Builder booked for project

Shepherd Construction has begun work on refurbishing York University's main library.

The 10m project to refurbish the JB Morrell Library, on the Heslington campus, will remove all asbestos from the existing 6,500 sq ft building, and modernise the library to provide a new facility for the university's 14,000 students.

The refurbishment will be undertaken in stages, beginning with the second floor. Temporary sound-proofed walls will be installed to minimise disruption to the other areas of the library. Eventually all walls and ceilings will be replaced. New lighting, heating and ventilation systems will also be installed.

The project is scheduled for completion in February 2012.

The library houses more than a million print books, 3,500 print journal titles, and numerous special collections.
