Burberry pushes sustainable look with new spring/summer range

Luxury retailer Burberry, which makes its world famous trench coats in Yorkshire, is launching a special edition of 26 styles from its Spring/Summer 2020 collection which will be made from the latest sustainable materials.

The “ReBurberry Edit” range features trench coats, parkas, capes and accessories created from ECONYL - a recycled nylon made from regenerated fishing nets, fabric scraps and industrial plastic.

Burberry said the new launch is part of a holistic sustainability programme and two thirds of Burberry products now make a positive social or environmental contribution to society.

Pam Batty, vice president corporate responsibility at Burberry, said: “We strongly believe that driving positive change through all of our products at every stage of the value chain is crucial to building a more sustainable future for our whole industry.”

The introduction of the ReBurberry Edit coincides with the global roll out of sustainability labelling across all key-product categories. The firm said the labels will provide customers with an insight into the industry-leading environmental and social credentials of the Burberry programme.

The new pistachio-coloured sustainability labels will show how a product meets a range of externally assured stringent criteria. These include the amount of organic content or recycled natural fibres used in materials, delivery against carbon emissions standards at production facilities or social initiatives such as workers being paid the living wage.

Additional outerwear garments in the range are made using a new nylon that has been developed from renewable resources such as castor oil, and a polyester yarn made from recycled plastic bottles.

Burberry said it has had social and environmental programmes in place for over a decade.

As part of a five-year Responsibility Agenda, Burberry has set ambitious goals for 2022 which focus on product, its operations and the communities that support the luxury industry.

These goals support the aims of the Paris Climate Agreement, as well as a number of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Burberry has a goal to be carbon neutral in its own energy use by 2022 and to obtain 100 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources in the same time frame.
