Buyers step in for food companies

TWO Yorkshire food businesses have been sold after they fell into administration.

Denby Dale Pie Company, which is based in West Yorkshire and makes frozen pies, was sold to Chapel Foods and Country Chef, of Scunthorpe, which processes potatoes for use by the makers of filled potato skins, was bought by Abbeydale Foods.

There were about 80 staff at Country Chef and 11 at Denby Dale. The two firms were linked by common shareholders and were placed in administration on February 24. PKF completed the sale of the businesses and assets and Grant Thornton and law firm Geldards acted for the buyers.

Both of the buying firms are part of a group of companies managed by Colin Wright and Andrew Hays, who have long histories of senior management positions in the food industry.

Jon Newell, partner at PKF, said a “high level” of interest was generated in the sale. “Because of this, we were able to offer the assets as a working production unit capable of an immediate return to operations and serving customers.”

It is believed that a number of workers made redundant from Denby Dale and Country Chef will be re-employed but this could not be confirmed.
