Capital gains on jobs

LONDONERS think they are less likely to suffer from recession than the rest of the country. And they are right, a new survey says.

The think tank IPPR North, working with Cardiff and Edinburgh universities, says London’s advantages include gaining 8,000 public sector jobs between June 2010 and June 2011, while Yorkshire and the Humber lost 47,000. The South East gained 24,000 while the North West lost 42,000 and the North East 32,000.

Director of IPPR North Ed Cox said: “The national economy might still just be growing but in the North the labour market already feels like it is back in recession.” The report is at www.ippr.org.
