Carclo aims to light way with green option

TECHNICAL plastics group Carclo is predicting "explosive growth" at its LED lighting division as people switch to the new technology in a bid to save money, become more stylish and conserve energy.

LED or light emitting diode lighting can control, focus and spread light.

Unlike filament-based light, it uses less power and lasts much longer.

The lighting is already popular in supercars such as the Bugatti Veyron, Lamborghini and Aston Martin, which all source their LED lighting from Ossett-based Carclo, but it will be two or three years before LED lighting becomes popular in UK homes.

"LED lighting is the green option," said Carclo's chief executive Ian Williamson. "But it can also do some very clever things. It can wash walls with light or change the colour of the lighting to suit your mood. You see it in reception areas in upmarket offices."

The lighting has a 10 to 15-year lifespan as opposed to the unpredictable short life of an electric bulb.

It doesn't give off heat which makes it much more energy efficient.

Mr Williamson was speaking yesterday as Carclo posted a 47 per cent rise in pre-tax profits to 2.5m for the six months to September 30, thanks to strong growth in LED optical products and medical diagnostics.

The company, whose technical plastics unit supplies fine tolerance, injection moulded plastic components to medical, optical and electronics products, said investment in new facilities would support further growth in these sectors.

Carclo, which also supplies precision products to the premium automotive and aerospace industries, said its precision products business was hit by customer delays in supercar lighting programmes.

But these programmes are now in production and a stronger second half performance is expected.
