Centres of success for Handmade

The York Handmade Brick Company has supplied North Yorkshire Moors Railway with 18,000 bricks for the new visitor and learning centres at Pickering station.

Both buildings are on platform two of the station. The 15,000 contract included bricks for specially-manufactured arches.

Philip Benham, general manager of North Yorkshire Moors Railway, said: "We are tremendously proud of our new visitor centre and learning centre and York Handmade's wonderful bricks are an integral part of them both."

John Ives, of York-based architects Potts, Parry, Ives and Young, said: "The new visitor centre is housed within the old Grade II listed pump house and it was crucial that the bricks replicated the size, colour and texture of the old pump house bricks. York Handmade's were the perfect, seamless match."

David Armitage, the chairman of York Handmade, based at Alne, near Easingwold, added: "The new visitor and learning centres are fine additions to Pickering Station and we are delighted to have played our part in their construction."

This contract follows the company's biggest contract win in its 22-year history, supplying more than 400,000 bricks to the new Chetham's School of Music in central Manchester.
