Chance to be part of the Games as firms win deals

A MODULAR building supplier and a designer of children’s clothing are two of the latest businesses in the region to benefit from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Actaccomm, a Mirfield-based company, has won contracts to deliver office and welfare accommodation buildings to the Olympic Park and Cohen and Wilks International (CWI), of Leeds, is to supply children’s clothing for under fives.

Actaccomm, which has 40 employees and carries out work nationwide, currently has three contracts through the Olympic Delivery Authority – two to deliver two-storey modular office and welfare accommodation buildings and one supplying single storey office accommodation, both at the Olympic Park.

The announcement comes as an event in York is held today aimed at encouraging and inspiring other businesses in Yorkshire and the Humber to do the same.

Some 200 delegates from across the region will hear how around £450m worth of goods are being procured to stage the Games.

With many of the larger contracts already underway, it’s an opportunity for smaller or niche Yorkshire businesses to learn how to capitalise on the opportunities and be at the front of the contracts queue.

Approximately 50 per cent of contracts are based outside London and more than half of suppliers are small and medium-sized businesses. Becoming a supplier for the largest catering event in the UK will be one of the major themes of the day.

The event, entitled 2011: the Year of Business Opportunities, is being staged at the Royal York Hotel and will be opened by Gary Verity, chairman of Welcome to Yorkshire. It is organised by the Yorkshire Gold Business Club.

The latest information on procurement and contracts available will be given by the headline speaker, Richard Beail, nations and regions manager for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which is responsible for staging London 2012.

Mr Verity said: “2011 is another big opportunity for Yorkshire to bring business from the Games to our county. There are still contracts worth hundreds of millions of pounds to be won across a huge range of products and services – everything from podiums for the medal winners to artists and performers for the ceremonies. These are all opportunities for companies right here and I would urge businesses to make sure they do not miss out.”

Today’s event is free but registration is required. To register, visit www.ygbc.co.uk. For further information, contact Lauren Pigg, events and Yorkshire Gold Business Club manager on 07595 564 299.

Earlier this week it was announced that the Chinese track and field team will hold their pre-Games training camp at Leeds Metropolitan University next July.
