Charger to bring the green car closer

GENERAL Electric yesterday unveiled a consumer-friendly electric vehicle charger designed to help accelerate the adoption of environmentally friendly plug-in vehicles.

The GE WattStation, created by industrial designer Yves Bhar, will go on sale in the United States, Europe and Asia from next year.

GE said the futuristic device significantly decreases time needed for vehicle charging and allows utility companies to manage the impact of electric vehicles on grids through smart grid technology.

Mr Bhar said: "Good design is when a new technology enters our life and makes it more simple, beautiful and healthy. The GE WattStation achieves this with a welcoming design that will seamlessly integrate into the urban landscape and become a natural part of our daily driving routine."

Electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf are scheduled to go on sale later this year.

Nissan announced earlier this year that the five-seater car will be mass produced at Sunderland.

The Leaf will have zero carbon emissions and will be capable of running 100 miles on one battery charge.

The WattStation will be available through utilities, auto dealerships, electrical wholesalers and licensed electrical contractors, and an online store.
