China group in £3m university deal

SINOCHEM Group, one of China’s biggest state-backed companies, is investing £3m in a collaborative research deal with the University of Leeds.

The money will be used to fund new research initiatives, including a project to develop anti-counterfeit technologies.

The research will be carried out in the Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences and the Faculty of Biological Sciences.

Professor Mike Wilson, the dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, where five of the research projects will be based, said: “This is a significant commitment to collaborative research and personnel training in science and technology from a state-backed Chinese company to a British higher education institution. We are honoured that science at Leeds is held in such high regard.”

There are more than 1,000 Chinese students studying at the university. It will also host the Chinese Olympic team as they prepare for the London 2012 Olympics.
