Church hall sale hits plans problem

Council officials are set to defy parishioners’ wishes over plans to transform a church hall into a home.

Lund Parish Council says it fully supports proposals to turn the hall – now closed for health and safety reasons – into a two-bedroom house.

Two local people have objected but 17 others have sent letters in support of the plans, which would raise much-needed income for All Saints’ Church. The village has a village hall and Lund parochial church council says the building, which is in a prominent position in the village, occupying a corner plot on The Green is “surplus to requirements”.

But planners say the PCC has not demonstrated that an alternative use is not viable.

They say: “The letters of support generally relate to the financial benefits that the sale of the church hall will bring to the village church.

“Unfortunately the financial gain associated with the sale is not a material planning consideration.”

They recommend refusal of the application which will be heard by councillors meeting in Beverley next Monday.

The meeting starts at 2pm.
