The Harrogate-based firm, which has 125 staff and a turnover of around £200m, also plans to help children gain an understanding of the energy market.

The company has traditionally targeted the SME (small and medium-sized enterprise) commercial gas market, and it has around 50,000 customers.

A CNG spokesman said: “Over the past 18 months CNG has been preparing for entering the electricity market, and will launch an electricity offer to its core customer area (SMEs) in 2017.

“CNG will be able to use its existing knowledge and expertise from the gas side of the business to increase its service offering. There will also be an opportunity to supply existing gas customers with electricity. All of CNG’s principles and values will translate well into this new market.”

The spokesman said that the Power Up project would aim to give customers more control of their power supply. There will also be a major schools programme, aimed at educating students about the importance of energy.

The spokesman said: “The initiative will be rolled out, initially in Harrogate, and target upper age-range of primary schools – children aged seven to 11. By giving children at a young age a better understanding of energy, we’re aiming to get them engaged in the subject and take an interest in what will undoubtedly be important in their lives.”

CNG’s managing director, Jacqui Hall said: “We’ve always been a bit different to other businesses in our industry and this new strategy is all about celebrating that.”
