Costain wins £115m road repairs deal

ENGINEER group Costain has won a five-year contract worth £115m torepair and maintain motorways in the North East.

The group said under its joint venture with consulting engineers Halcrow and contractor Colas, it won the contract from the Highways Agency to repair motorways and trunk roads across North Yorkshire, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and Durham.

The area contains 396 miles of motorway and trunk roads as well as 419 structures such as bridges and gantries, and the contract starts on July 1.

Chief executive Andrew Wyllie said: "This is an important contract award for Costain. We have targeted maintenance contracts as a key priority in line with our strategic goal of achieving a significant market share in this area."

A year ago Costain won a five-year 200m contract to service motorways and trunk roads across Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, also part of the joint venture.
