Council bids to take control

A YORKSHIRE council is set to ask the Government for permission to retake control of its education authority once a 10-year contract with a private firm expires.

Next month Bradford councillors will be asked to approve plans to

approach Education Secretary Michael Gove to remove an order which forced the city to bring in outside help 10 years ago.

After a damning Ofsted inspection, the authority's education services were handed over to a private firm – Education Bradford – which is operated by Serco. Its 360m contract expires next year and the former Children's Secretary Ed Balls had indicated he was willing to let the council take its services back in-house.

Bradford Council's Children's Services Scrutiny Committee will discuss the plans today before the authority's executive makes a decision in September.
