Cranswick sees a switch to pork

Sausage specialist Cranswick has seen an increase in pork sales as hard up consumers switch to cheaper meats.

The Hull-based group, which issued a profits warning in July, said the versatility and relatively low price of pork are key to this positive trend.

It added that the growing popularity of pork products has been a contributory factor to a recent increase in sales at Cranswick.

Underlying sales volumes in the first quarter covering April, May and June grew by three per cent and rose by seven per cent in July, August and September.

The average volume growth across the six months was five per cent.

Export sales grew strongly, with growth particularly strong in Far Eastern markets. Initial inroads were also made into the US market after the Hull fresh pork facility received USDA accreditation in April 2011.

Underlying turnover in the six months to September 30 was six per cent ahead of the same period last year, reflecting an increase in the rate of growth during the second quarter.

Total sales for the six months were three per cent higher after taking into account business transferred to Farmers Boy Deeside in July 2010.

The group reported growth in sales of pastry products.
