Crown adds Newland to paint empire

CROWN Paints Group has increased the size of its business empire in Yorkshire by acquiring Newland Paint Supplies for an undisclosed sum.

Founded in 1985, York-based Newland Paint Supplies employs 18 staff and has branches in Bridlington, Harrogate, Hull, Scunthorpe and York.

The company specialises in the supply of paints and decorative materials to trade and retail customers.

Newland will continue to trade under its own name as part of the Crown Paints Group.

Crown Paints, which is based in Darwen in Lancashire, already has a manufacturing site in Hull, which employs 184 staff.

Brian Davison, the chief executive of Crown Paints, said: "The acquisition fits with our growth strategy."

Crown Paints was the subject of a management buyout from Dutch coatings manufacturer, Akzo Nobel, in October 2008, which was backed by Endless, the Leeds-based turnaround specialist.

The company is the largest independently owned paint manufacturer in the UK and Ireland.
