Cummins teams up for £1m turbo tests

CUMMINS Turbo Technologies, the Huddersfield-based engineering specialist, is launching a £1m project to help reduce emissions in engines.

The company has won backing from Yorkshire Forward, the regional development agency, to develop next generation test methods for turbochargers.

Cummins will work in partnership with Bradford University's school of engineering, design and technology.

A company spokeswoman said: "As low-emission legislation worldwide is pushing the operating conditions of the turbocharger to extreme speeds and temperatures, new test methods will enable Cummins to develop technologies to withstand difficult operating conditions on marine, truck and other large diesel engines worldwide, technology that is contributing to a cleaner world.

"The knowledge gained will also enhance the high-technology design and research capabilities in the Yorkshire region."

Professor Andrew Day, of Bradford University, said: "The project partnership will enhance the technology base of the region in the important high value-added automotive field and will strengthen these links to increase the possibilities for future collaboration.

"The university will also extend its academic expertise to enable training of future graduates in high technology knowledge and skills for the benefit of this crucial sector in the region and nationwide."

Dr John Allport, of Cummins, said: "We are delighted to work in partnership with the university on this ground- breaking project which will benefit from the necessary high-technology research facilities.

"In turn, the university will develop new areas of research expertise, particularly in heavy duty engine research where facilities are rare, through the development of this world class large engine research facility."

The test methods will measure and monitor the complex turbine blade vibration modes within a turbocharger.

They will allow accurate correlation of advanced simulation methods used to validate new designs.

Formerly known as Holset, American-owned Cummins Turbo Technologies is the world's largest manufacturer of turbochargers for the medium-heavy duty diesel engines market.
