Drax’s £100m turbine project to cut emissions by 1m tonnes

DRAX Power Station has seen its carbon dioxide emissions drop since 2006 as a result of its turbine upgrade and burning sustainable biomass in place of some of its coal.

In 2006, the power station emitted 844 tonnes of CO2 for each gigawatt-hour of electricity generated. In 2011, that figure was down to 760.

Peter Emery, production director, said: “The plan we developed was to improve the efficiency of the plant and at the same time develop the capability to burn biomass, which is a low-carbon fuel.”
