Drivers stump up for accident damage

A quarter of motorists have paid for damage they caused in an accident themselves to avoid having to make a claim on their car insurance.Around 24 per cent of people who have caused an accident admitted they had covered the cost of damage to another driver's vehicle themselves rather than use their insurance, says discount website MyVoucherCodes.co.uk.

The main reason drivers gave for paying for the cost of any damage themselves was that they did not want their insurance premiums increased as a result of making a claim, while 11 per cent did not want to lose their no claims bonus. Just over a fifth of motorists also said the excess on their insurance was too high to make it worthwhile claiming on the policy. But two per cent admitted they had to pay for the damage themselves because they were not insured to drive the vehicle.
