Enterprising business splashing out into North-East

A small business which has taught thousands of babies to swim is planning to expand across Yorkshire and the North-East.

Since it was founded eight years ago by Laura Molloy, Swimbabes has gone from teaching babies in a hydro pool in Huddersfield to operating out of 15 venues.

The 650,000 turnover company has 1,500 mothers and babies signed up for its classes every week.

It is now one of the UK's leading providers of baby swimming classes.

A company spokesman said: "Before Swimbabes, there were hardly any structured lessons available in Yorkshire for parents to take their child to and the business is growing at a rapid rate."

Swimbabes has opened two swimming shops and runs an online store www.swimbabes.co.uk and plans to establish a partnership scheme for people who wish to join the company.

The spokesman added: "It is different from the usual franchise model, because Swimbabes offer an equal share of risk and profits from day one."

The spokesman added: "Swimbabes are confident that this business model will allow them to expand the areas of operation, and already have someone in the North-East who is keen to set up a partnership arrangement."

Ms Molloy set up Swimbabes in 2001 after the birth of her first son, Joshua, who was diagnosed with a serious congenital heart defect.

After 10 days in hospital, Joshua was well enough to go home. He continued to do well and after five weeks was able to take part in a swimming class for babies.

Ms Molloy, who had worked as a development consultant, recalled: "Joshua had a brilliant time at his swimming lessons. He enjoyed being in the water and it was a very rewarding time for the both of us."

Ms Molloy said that she enjoyed the swimming lessons so much that she decided to train as a baby swimming instructor.

Ms Molloy said: "After having Joshua, I felt like I changed overnight. I wanted to be there for him and do all that I could to help him.

"Swimming had been so rewarding for Joshua but it was something that I had relished too. I decided to challenge myself and set up my own business, and I am so glad I did."
