Expansion plans see MKM move into new headquarters

ONE of Britain’s biggest independent builders’ merchants has moved into new, purpose-built headquarters.

Hull-based MKM Building Supplies, which was established 17 years ago by entrepreneurs David Kilburn and Peter Murray, has relocated to a new £1m office and warehouse complex on Stoneferry Road, East Hull.

The 10,000 sq ft building, which was built by Hall Construction Group, will house MKM’s 60-strong central support team during the next phase of the company’s growth.

The development is part of a £20m group-wide expansion plan which will see the firm build on its 37-strong UK branch network in Yorkshire, Scotland, the North West, the Midlands and the South of England with 10 new branches, creating up to 200 jobs in the process.

MKM employs more than 700 people across the UK.

Chief executive David Kilburn said: “As MKM has grown over recent years we found ourselves increasingly short of space and were faced with the decision to either move site, which would have been logistically very difficult, or design and build a place bespoke to our needs.

“We opted to stay on Stoneferry, where the business was founded, and create a brand new office that way we knew we would end up with precisely what we wanted.”

Hull-based Chameleon fitted out the building in December.

Neil Symmonds, commercial director at Hall Construction Group, said: “It is always a source of pride for us to be working with local companies, especially ones like MKM which is a major Hull success story. We think the building really enhances the Stoneferry area and is an excellent base from which David and his colleagues can drive the business forward.”

It has also been involved in developing some of Hull’s best-known buildings including the KC Stadium.
