Farmers head to the shops to promote Red Tractor

Members of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) and Ladies in Pigs are involved in a series of half-day events at supermarket stores across the UK to better inform the public about the high quality food production standards that the Red Tractor logo guarantees.

NFU deputy president Minette Batters said: “Farmers and growers are rightly extremely proud of the work they do and the high quality food they produce. Red Tractor Week offers a great opportunity for farmers and growers to talk to the public and promote great British food and farming.

“We have a great story to tell. The food and farming sector provides jobs to some 3.9m people and combined contributes to the economy a massive £108bn.

“The Red Tractor Assurance scheme means that shoppers can trace their food from farm to fork. The logo is a world leading standard for quality, food safety, traceability, animal welfare and a cared for environment.”

Sue Woodall, chairwoman of Ladies in Pigs, added: “This is our opportunity to leave shoppers with a positive view of British agriculture.

“The Red Tractor logo is an iconic symbol of this - assuring shoppers that their food is traceable, safe to eat and produced responsibly. People will be able to get a better understanding of the standards that British farming adheres to.”

This Red Tractor Week - September 12-18 - sees the launch of the biggest on-pack promotion to date with promotional stickers on meat, poultry, dairy, cereals, fruit and vegetable products.

Two supermarket events are happening in Yorkshire: on Monday at Aldi in Bramley, Leeds, 10am-1pm; and on Tuesday at Asda in Wakefield between the same times.
