Forensic team joins innovation campus

A FORENSIC science company which was involved in the investigation into the murder of Stephen Lawrence has become the first commercial organisation to open a base on the Sand Hutton Applied Innovation Campus.

The 15-strong team at Forensic Access has worked on a number of complex, high profile murder cases. Apart from providing forensic science research in support of defence and prosecution cases, the company also provides scientific support in connection with matters of national security.

The campus, which is home to the Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA), hopes to welcome more private sector firms.

Fera chief executive Adrian Belton said yesterday: “The synergy between our two organisations was one of the deciding factors in Forensic Access deciding to locate at Sand Hutton. Our scientists are looking forward to working alongside scientists from Forensic Access.”

Forensic Access managing director Roger Robson said: “Our presence on the site will facilitate the transfer of cutting edge knowledge and skill into forensic science, which will be of great benefit to investigators and the courts, especially in more complex criminal investigations.”

As a result of moving to Sand Hutton, Forensic Access expects to double its staff numbers and achieve a “significant increase” in its £1m turnover.
