Fusion spin-off in launch of ultrasound system

FUSION IP, which turns university research into business, said one of its spin-offs has launched an ultrasound training simulator.

MedaPhor has launched the ScanTrainer, which trains future ultrasound experts without the need for direct supervision, making the system highly cost effective. The Cardiff-based spin-off said its device "bridges the gap between conventional training and the patient". It combines the latest generation animation with 'real feel' simulation techniques to train students to use ultrasound. It costs 25,000 and will go on sale next month.

The Trans-vaginal ScanTrainer was launched to coincide with the British Society for Gynaecological Imaging's annual scientific meeting, which ends today.

MedaPhor also plans to launch a range of other ScanTrainers for the trans-abdominal and general medical markets, along with a range of gynaecology and obstetrics-based pathology software programmes.

Sheffield-based Fusion has exclusive access to research generated by Cardiff and Sheffield universities and owns 36.7 per cent of Medaphor.

Fusion chief executive David Baynes said: "This is an exciting time to be a shareholder in MedaPhor, as the company takes its first product to market. We look forward to MedaPhor announcing UK sales of the system and the signing of overseas distributors for ScanTrainer before the end of 2010."
