Gaspara Asset Management is aiming for net zero investment

Founded in 2020, Gaspara Asset Management is the private investment and asset management arm of the Pennine Energy Group, which offers its clients and co-investors direct investments and tailored special purpose vehicle opportunities to include their two listed BVI Private Funds, Gaspara Green and Gaspara Blue, both of which aim to offer strong financial returns alongside the major environmental and societal benefits that will come from reducing carbon emissions and the global carbon footprint.

"The idea is to build something lasting for the region,” says fund manager Anthony Pears. “We don't believe all trading companies and hedge funds should be in London, Geneva, New York or Paris. If young people want to work in the financial markets, why should they have to move away to do so? If they're from Yorkshire or the North East, they should be able to find those jobs here.

“For too long, this has been a forgotten area of the world, so we're trying to build something exciting for the region whilst helping drive certain aspects of the energy transition. With a growing political focus on the region becoming a major green hub of Europe, the area needs certain skills, we have them, want to unite like-minded people, and give something back."

Living up to the idea of wanting to give back to the region, many of the team at Gaspara Asset Management have chosen to return to the area after making a living elsewhere. In Anthony’s case, that was in Geneva, where he was the global head of lead and zinc derivatives trading, for a multi-national global trading house.

"We've built a strong, growing team, who are looking at all aspects of the energy transition and through our team and wider network, are pulling in information and expertise on both a national and global scale” Anthony explains. “We work with local companies, international companies and governmental bodies such as the DFT to ensure our expertise helps drive future policy. Our team of traders is our USP - we have backgrounds across global financial markets, in renewable and traditional energy and commodities - a unique pool of talent perfectly tailored to understanding the helicopter view over the entire spectrum of the energy transition. As a result, our goal is to become more embedded in projects here in the North."

Citing the energy transition as ‘The investment opportunity of a lifetime’ Gaspara Asset Management offer both individuals and institutions access to their investments and only offer investments in projects and funds which they themselves are invested in. It’s never been more important to be environmentally conscious, with a focus on sustainability, and Anthony and his team are eager to help people understand how much good that can do for the planet, and how important it will be for investors to lead the charge.

"We want to change the overly technical, often daunting investment landscape by offering our investors something different, a more approachable, no-nonsense, interactive investment experience,” says Anthony of what investors can expect. “We're not a faceless, hands-off organisation, we're available over the phone, and we'd like people to be able to come by our office to see what we are doing, we will hold investor days and create a more enjoyable investment experience.”

“Most investors don't know where their money is or who's managing it, and they certainly can't speak to anyone at the coal face about their money – they are just another number. We're trying to break the mould, where we are part of the fabric of the community and projects within the region, we want investors to come together and network, to create an investment community for the North. This is our time"
