Graduates suffering more in region, claims research

graduate unemployment is higher in Yorkshire than the national average, new research has suggested.

A survey by Graduates Yorkshire, the recruitment firm, found that the largest group of unemployed and underemployed graduates had taken business and management courses with nearly one in four out of work or in a dead-end job.

Computer science and IT graduates fared much better as 84 per cent were in work or further study.

Graduates Yorkshire polled 1,039 graduates living and working in the region last year.

Dr Paul Youngson, of Huddersfield University, carried out the research. He said: “Yorkshire is not doing particularly well in terms of graduate recruitment.”

The situation on pay was not much better. More than two thirds of those in work were earning less than 70 per cent, according to the survey.

Graduates said their ideal place of work would be Yorkshire Water, while the NHS was the top public sector choice.
