Hadaway doing the biz for Viz

SID the Sexist isn't the sort of client that many lawyers would like to unleash on an unsuspecting world.

Law firm Ward Hadaway is proud of its links with Sid, to say nothing of Roger Mellie, the man on the telly.

Fans of puerile humour will recognise them as characters from Viz, the Newcastle-based magazine which has been essential reading for generations of students.

Ward Hadaway, which has an office in Leeds, is sponsoring Viz Comic's 30th anniversary exhibition, which takes place this month.

Intellectual property experts at Ward Hadaway have advised the team behind Viz on a range of publishing and commercial issues since 2003.

They include Jenny Jackson, from Leeds, who is in the law firm's creative industries and intellectual property team.

Ward Hadaway is sponsoring The Viz 30th Birthday exhibition, which takes place at the Lit & Phil Library in Newcastle until September 4.

The exhibition features more than 70 pieces of original artwork of classic characters such as Sid and Roger.

Newcastle-based Alex Shiel, partner and head of intellectual property at Ward Hadaway, said: "Having worked with the team at Viz for a number of years, we were only too pleased to be able to help with the staging of this exhibition which brings two very different yet equally precious North-East institutions together in the shape of Viz and the Lit & Phil.

"Hopefully, this also shows that lawyers do have a sense of humour as well."

Caroline Lievesley, marketing manager at the Lit & Phil, said: "The event is a celebration of a North-East cult classic and was very popular when it was first shown at the Cartoon Museum in London late last year.

"This is a great chance for people from the region to see some of Viz's iconic work up close and in its original form."

What Biffa Bacon – another Viz stalwart – would have made of anyone trying to get "up close" and personal doesn't bear thinking about.
