High street hoping for late rush to the shops

Retailers are counting on a late Christmas rush as shoppers hold off from making purchases in the hope of grabbing a bargain.

The British Retail Consortium said UK retail sales were 0.4 per cent higher last month than a year ago, but the figures were flattered by weak comparisons with last year.

Retailers were hoping for stronger November trading after a battering the previous month when retail sales volumes dropped 0.8 per cent.

Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, said: “November was off to a flying start helped by end-of-month paydays, mid-season sales and the impact of half term, which had been in the previous month last year.

“But sales growth slowed as November unfolded, suggesting that customers are taking care not to spend too much too soon, although must-have toy and technology items did well as people bought early so as not to be disappointed.”

Several toy retailers have said Christmas shopping is starting later this year.

The BRC said tablet computers were a strong driver of growth.

Clothing sales were boosted by the fashion for all-in-one outfits, known as ‘onesies’.

Singers Rihanna and Robbie Williams were among the celebrities who have stepped out in their own versions of the adult rompers.

The colder weather helped boost winter clothing ranges and boots.
