Historic building set for revival

FOR many shoppers, Broad Gate in Leeds will always be linked with the dawn of the consumer age.

Broad Gate was formerly the home of Lewis’s, the first department store in Leeds, which was built in 1932. It was later home to the much-loved Allders store.

In its heyday, as Britain moved away from post-war austerity, the Allders department store was the envy of every shopping centre outside London.

Broad Gate will soon become a place to work and shop. Northwood Investors has appointed the Leeds office of global property consultancy Knight Frank to market the 300,000 sq ft Broad Gate office and retail development.

The mixed-use scheme includes four floors of Grade A office space and a suite of penthouse offices, together with four prime retail units.

Eamon Fox, a partner at Knight Frank in Leeds, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this very prestigious instruction by Northwood Investors, the new owners of Broad Gate, who have invested in one of the finest office developments in Yorkshire.

“Such is the success of Broad Gate that only one suite of 10,814 sq ft is still available to let. This suite has only just come back on the market, as Broad Gate was previously fully let, so it is a wonderful chance to move to one of the great office buildings in Leeds.

“The excellent location, overlooking The Headrow, creates a business destination with all the benefits of the city centre on its doorstep.

“The transformation of this historic building offers a unique opportunity to take some of the most remarkable space in the city centre,”

Roddy Morrison of Colliers said yesterday: “We are already experiencing a very high level of interest in the 10,814 sq ft of quality office space, which is available at Broad Gate, as there is a shortage of Grade A office stock in the city centre.”
