Ikea’s charity aid for Africa refugees

Swedish furniture giant Ikea has given $62m to help refugees fleeing conflict and drought in the Horn of Africa in the largest ever private donation to the United Nations.

The UN High Commission for Refugees said the money would expand emergency relief for the thousands of people at the world’s largest refugee complex in Dadaab, Kenya.

The complex was originally designed for 90,000 people but is now home to 440,000 refugees, 150,000 of whom are said to have arrived in the last few months from Somalia. Many of the new arrivals are suffering from malnutrition.

António Guterres, UN commissioner, said: “The crisis in the Horn of Africa continues to deepen with thousands of people fleeing Somalia every week. We are extremely grateful.

“Help like this can’t come a moment too soon.”
