Ilkley Business Forum proves a shining example of how to cope in a downturn

ILkley, so long synonymous with Yorkshire’s unofficial national anthem, is also home to a pressure group that defends the interests of small firms.

The Ilkley Business Forum (IBF) was formed in 2009 to act as a sounding board for companies in Ilkley, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Menston and Addingham.

IBF members have been praised by the chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, Gary Verity, who believes groups from other areas could learn from their “creative” approach to coping with a downturn.

The Ilkley Summer Showcase on Saturday, June 16 is the next event on IBF’s calendar – when more than 1,000 visitors are expected to head to Ilkley’s King’s Hall and Winter Garden. The town’s first shopping trail weekend was held this month.

Hundreds of shoppers followed a route that took them to 20 of Ilkley’s independent retailers.

Acting IBF chairman Steve Butler said yesterday: “The LS29 district offers an unparalleled range of independent shops, services and skills and we know visitors will enjoy this year’s innovative showcase.

“We’re also confident we’ll be welcoming even more businesses to join us when they see how much support forum members give and receive.”
