IndyCube provides boost for region's entrepreneurs

IndyCube Wakefield is based at the Wakefield Media and Creativity Centre, in King Street, and offers 14 desk spaces.

IndyCube aims to offer a new way of providing office space for small businesses, freelances and remote workers who prefer not to work alone, by providing workspace in a community of like-minded people,

IndyCube, which was founded in Wales, has 27 co-working centres and is a co-operative owned by its members.

Wakefield has the first IndyCube outside Wales. Three other centres are expected to open across England this year.

People can rent a desk by the day or month and have access to the growing network of IndyCube Centres across the UK. It’s hoped that many of the firms that use Indycube will enjoy rapid growth.

Charlotte Blacker and Mark Taylor, who run animation business Good Cop Bad Cop Productions, are the centre’s first tenants.

An IndyCube spokesman said: “The centre works to a philosophy that your future success is not down to what you know - but who the people around you know, and how you collaborate is going to be your defining skill.

“IndyCube uses what it calls a bottom-up approach to business expansion, relying on opportunities through contacts and available properties to direct its growth.”

Andy Green, a spokesman for Indycube Wakefield, said: “A remarkable success story is coming to Wakefield.

“It’s good news for anyone looking for somewhere better to work. It’s good for Wakefield because it’s creating a new vibrant place. And it’s good news for IndyCube, being their first centre in England.

IndyCube Wakefield was officially opened by Wakefield’s Labour MP, Mary Creagh, who is backing the centre’s work to encourage enterprise around Wakefield.
