Interface aims to take to the floor to show its strong green credentials

CARPET manufacturer InterfaceFLOR has pledged to win a green stamp of approval for all its products by 2012.

The company, which is part of US-based Interface and has a site in Shelf, West Yorkshire, as well as in Northern Ireland and Holland, said it will obtain third-party validated environmental product declarations (EPDs). It is part of the firm's plan to become carbon neutral by 2020. EPDs are often described as a sophisticated product 'label' which lists its environmental impact throughout its lifecycle.

Interface also launched 2010 Mission Zero Milestones, an interactive report, describing its progress over the last 16 years and laying out the future challenges. It also called on other firms to set sustainabilty goals.

Dan Hendrix, president and chief executive of Interface, said: "With the multitude of environmental labels in the marketplace, adoption of EPDs is the right thing to do and Interface's way forward.

"EPDs require full transparency, create new standards of accountability, and will ultimately spur new levels of innovation as customers begin to understand the impacts of their purchasing decisions."

Interface, whose customers include Yorkshire Water, Yorkshire Bank, Santander, HBOS and Bradford University, aims to become more sustainable by cutting its carbon footprint, redesigning products to ensure less material goes to landfill sites and changing its culture.
