ITM Power meet European emissions target

CLEAN fuel firm ITM Power said today its hydrogen vans had met a European emissions target.

The Sheffield firm said the HICE (Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine) vans, developed with with Revolve Technologies, have achieved Euro VI spark ignition emissions levels.

ITM said the vehicle, tested at Millbrook Proving Ground, was better than the proposed 2014 Euro VI emissions standards as it produced just 0.07g/km NOx over the NEDC drive cycle.

The van does not use any emissions control device and achieves the low level by calibration of fueling and spark timing.

The HICE Ford transit vans will now have some minor changes to improve the power, and therefore load handling, ready for light commercial use. They will support ITM's HFuel product on trials early next year, as part of the HOST system of hydrogen on-site trials.

Graham Cooley, chief executive, said: "The HOST trials will not only demonstrate ITM Power's hydrogen production technologies, they will also demonstrate the safe handling and conditioning of hydrogen, and how it may be applied to daily transport.

"Having a vehicle platform capable of meeting the very high expectations of today's fleet operators is essential in order to demonstrate that hydrogen is viable here and now."
