Jobs to go as administrators close stores

More than 1,000 jobs will be lost after administrators of department store chain TJ Hughes announced that 22 of its stores are closing.

Ernst & Young said the stores, including one in Hull, will shut next week with 1,061 employees across the UK facing redundancy.

A spokesman said they were still trying to sell the company’s remaining business and assets.

Liverpool-based TJ Hughes called in the administrators in June after a difficult period of trading, as nervous consumers put off buying big-ticket items such as fridges and TVs.

Hull council leader Steve Brady told the Yorkshire Post last night that the job losses were a blow to the city.

He said: “It’s going to be a big loss. I’m very sorry to see it go and I’m very sorry for the staff.”
