Landmark offices to boost the West End

THE regeneration of Leeds’ West End is to take a major step forward with the building of a new office development, the first of its kind to be built in the city in five years.

Construction is due to start on 10 Wellington Place next month after commercial law firm Shulmans confirmed it would take 15,000 sq ft across two floors of the development, which will include ground floor retail space.

Rick de Blaby, CEO of MEPC, the property development and management firm behind Wellington Place, said: “We believe 10 Wellington Place will be the first new build grade A office development to be completed in Leeds city centre for five years, since The Mint in Holbeck was completed in 2009.”

The news will provide a shot in the arm for the local economy, particularly for the property and construction sector, which has struggled in the face of the economic downturn. It also represents a vote of confidence in the city’s professional services sector.

MEPC said that 10 Wellington Place is “the first step” towards developing the rest of the estate, marking “the next phase of regeneration in the West End of Leeds”.

Jeff Pearey, head of the Leeds office at Jones Lang LaSalle, the letting agents which acted on behalf of MEPC, said: “It’s a major achievement in this market to agree a pre-let.”

Together with the opening of Trinity Leeds and the upcoming launch of Leeds Arena, this new development helps the city to show it is open for business.
