Laser cutter firm takes off at the speed of light

AN entrepreneur who served his apprenticeship at one of Britain's best known forges has created jobs after investing £600,000 in a laser metal-cutting plant.

Leeds-based Accurate Laser Cutting, which was launched in Spring 2010 by businessman Mike Briggs, now employs six staff and its monthly turnover stands at more than 50,000.

Mr Briggs, who established the operation on the Stourton Business Park in South Leeds, said: "We really appear to have

hit a niche market in the Leeds area."

He has been involved in the industry since he served his apprenticeship at the former Kirkstall Forge in Leeds.

He added: "We received our first order on June 3, two days after becoming operational, since when we've completed

several hundred, ranging from small-scale prototyping to five-figure value high volume runs.

"Many enquiries have resulted from existing customer recommendations."

Mr Briggs was previously a senior engineer for a rival laser

cutting machinery manufacturer and managed a 30-strong team of service engineers. In August 2010, Mike Cursons, who has 20 years experience in laser cutting technology, joined the company as technical director.

Paul Stephens, Leeds City Council chief officer for economic development, said: "Mike and his team have got off to a tremendous start since they opened for business in the summer.

"Leeds and the surrounding city region is a major centre

for manufacturing in the UK, with core strengths in engineering and fabrication, making it the perfect location for Mike and his team to establish and grow the new enterprise."
