Launch of enterprise to bridge the gap for young people

A BUSINESS to encourage enterprise in education has been launched by Carl Hopkins, the Leeds businessman and former star of Channel 4’s Secret Millionaire.

Joblink Solutions works with schools and colleges to give young people the chance to achieve their entrepreneurial ambitions.

The business, which is a Community Interest Company (CIC), was created by Mr Hopkins to bridge the gap between a young person’s aspirations, which may not always be based on academic success, and employers’ expectations and requirements.

Joblink Solutions includes a mix of educational programmes and workshops, which are delivered by a variety of social enterprise organisations as well as business leaders, including Mr Hopkins.

The educational workshops will cover topics ranging from company branding to healthy eating and body image.

All sessions are aimed at improving a young person’s confidence, self belief and skill sets so they are prepared for the world of work or self-employment.

The “inspirational training arm” of the business exists because according, to Mr Hopkins “sometimes young people don’t need educating, they just need motivating; a bit of a stir to energise them into action – especially those from more disadvantaged backgrounds who need help in realising that they too can achieve their ambitions.” Mr Hopkins said he decided to launch the company because it offered a way of providing a structure to the enterprise work he has been involved in since appearing on Channel 4’s The Secret Millionaire, three years ago.

Since selling his marketing agency JDA in 2007, Mr Hopkins has turned his hand to serial entrepreneurship, becoming involved with a variety of businesses that range from a recruitment agency to selling sporting supplements.

Since appearing on the show he has become a supporter of enterprise in an official capacity.

He was an ambassador for Enterprise UK until its demise earlier this year. Mr Hopkins has also spoken at 13 colleges and schools.

Mr Hopkins said: “I see the formation of Joblink Systems CIC as a natural development of the work and appearances I have done over the last two years within the education sector.

“Joblink Solutions allows me to introduce experts in inspirational and educational techniques to young people in preparation for their job, career or entrepreneurial journey that they might not have access to otherwise.”

Since it was launched, Joblink Solutions has delivered a series of workshops for schools across Calderdale in West Yorkshire on behalf of Calderdale Council.

Mr Hopkins said he hoped schools in Bradford would use Joblink’s services, as well as schools in his home town of Leeds.
