Leeds joins ranks of centres for precision medical excellence

LEEDS and Manchester are among six new centres of excellence which are being established with the aim of ensuring that the UK becomes a leader in the field of medical innovation.

The new centres will become part of the Government-backed Precision Medicine Catapult.

The catapult is a network of technology and innovation centres that bring together businesses, scientists and engineers.

Precision medicine is part of a new approach to medicine, which combines accurate diagnosis with therapies and services that aim to improve patient care.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne recently announced that the Precision Medicine Catapult would be headquartered in Cambridge, and it will also be supported by a network of centres across the UK.

Responding to the announcement, Dr Hakim Yadi, the chief executive of the Northern Health Science Alliance, which is a partnership established by the major universities and NHS Hospital Trusts in the North of England, said: “We are delighted to see the expertise of the North’s universities, teaching hospitals and academic health science networks validated in this way.

“This news ‘supercharges’ the Northern Powerhouse, and is the result of the North working together to highlight the region’s strengths in precision medicine.”
