Her entry into Cannes on the French Riviera was at a gentle pace, but it was part of a high profile strategy to sell Yorkshire as a world class place for investment.

Ms Armitstead, from Otley, who arrived at the head of the Cycle to Cannes charity cycle ride, opened the Leeds City Region stand at the MIPIM property conference 2013.

MIPIM, which closes tomorrow, is expected to have attracted 4,100 investors from 83 countries. Ms Armitstead was doing her bit to promote investment opportunities in the Leeds city region.

She said: “I really believe that Leeds and the wider city region is part of the reason for my success. I am always proud of where I am from as I do passionately believe it is the best place to live, work and do business.

“I am delighted to be here to support the Leeds City Region at MIPIM, and wish the delegation every success.”

The Leeds City Region delegation to MIPIM is being led by Leeds and Partners – the marketing organisation that promotes Leeds as a place to live and work.

The delegation includes representatives from Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford and York city councils and the Leeds City Region local enterprise partnership, along with private sector partners. The Leeds and Partners delegation has received more than £100,000 sponsorship to pay for their attendance,

Leeds and Partners chief executive Lurene Joseph said: “It is lovely to have Lizzie supporting us on this ride. She is inspirational, a great example of a Yorkshire winner, and we look forward to her future success.

“Delivering the Olympics, embracing the Tour de France, and being the home to a range of world class business opportunities are all ways in which we demonstrate that we have the confidence, ability and infrastructure to be a home for a wide range of investment.”

Tony Reeves, chief executive head of Leeds City Region, added: “Our leaders and chief executives are really clear that we’re not competing against each other; we’re competing as one against others.”

At MIPIM, the Leeds City Region leaders also confirmed they were unveiling a £500m Economic Investment Fund to drive development opportunities.
