Look East for trade opportunities

Leeds will host a group of international trade specialists to highlight the financial and professional business opportunities available in China, Hong Kong and India at a roadshow today.

The event, organised by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), aims to provide regional businesses with the best routes to success in the markets and tips to overcome obstacles that may be faced along the way.

It will feature a series of presentations, workshops and one-to-one meetings with professionals based in these markets.

Trade and Investment Minister Lord Green said: "These two economies are experiencing exceptionally strong growth in this sector, which is creating a market for financial and investment products and a wealth of opportunities for British firms – and firms not just in London but in all parts of the country.

"The event in Leeds gives companies, specifically SMEs in this sector, a chance to learn from market experts about the growing business opportunities in China and India, the challenges they may face there, and the practical help available from UK Trade and Investment to overcome them."

Speakers include Mark Robson, UKTI regional director for Yorkshire and Humber; Howard Kew, chief executive of Financial Leeds; Gerry Grimstone, chairman of Standard Life and Financial Services India Champion, UKTI; and David Wootton, corporate partner at Allen & Overy. Mr Robson said: "Most people are well aware that China and India are experiencing unprecedented economic growth.

"What is perhaps less well understood is the scale of the change now underway. We forecast that their share of global GDP will grow from 13 per cent in 2010 to 33 per cent in 2030, or more than the EU or US economies combined. That has extraordinary implications for every British exporter."
