‘The loss of legal aid has had and will continue to have a social impact’

The most significant development in recent years has been the loss of legal aid, which has had, and will continue to have, a significant social impact; couples remaining married long after separation, financial assets on divorce not resolved, fathers and mothers with no contact with their children.

What law would you like to see changed?

The divorce law. We have a Dickensian system that is still based on fault, which is not appropriate in a modern society. We should also have a divorce law requiring separation for a much shorter period than the current two years.

What is the most exciting work you’ve ever done?

I’d hesitate to use the word exciting in my line of work – for me, every case is both interesting and challenging.

Who in the legal world do you most admire?

I admire the unsung heroes, the judiciary who are dealing every day with litigants in person and addressing the problems caused by the loss of legal aid and cuts in the court service.

What advice would you give someone starting out in the profession?

If you want to be involved in family law, you have to be genuinely interested in people and in their lives. A curious nature is a prerequisite, as is being practical.
