Major grant for ITM Power

GREEN fuel company ITM Power has won more than £250,000 extra funding for an environmentally friendly project.

The Sheffield-based firm said today it has won 264,179 from the Technology Strategy Board for its HydroGEN' project, bringing the total grant to 503,476.

The objective of the project is to develop novel alkaline polymeric membrane materials and catalysts to reduce the cost of existing state-of-the-art solid polymer electolysers, while maintaining current performance and being compatible with intermittent electricity supplies which are typical of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.

Dr Graham Cooley, chief executive of ITM, said: "The TSB's extension of the project funding shows that the technology we are now creating offers serious benefits and fulfills the growing need for truly carbon free energy sources for the future."

The project started in August 2008 and runs to July next year with consortium partners Teer Coatings, Boddingtons Technical Plastics and the University of Southampton.
