Making a Point with £285,000 expansion programme

ENGINEERING company Point Engineering is embarking on a £285,000 expansion programme to create new workshop facilities.

The Hull-based firm, which carried out specialist metal fabrication work for the enormous balloon used in the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in India, plans to extend its 24,000 sq ft engineering workshop and office space to 30,000 sq ft by the start of 2012 after taking on six new staff and expanding into overseas markets.

The company, whose clients include manufacturing, processing, distribution and energy companies, has expanded into European and world markets to supply marine doors and fabrications to shipbuilders and repairers, as well as products for the commercial and leisure sectors.

Closer to home, it carried out fabrication and testing work on Neptune Renewable Energy’s Proteus tidal turbine in Hull.

The company, which has taken on six new staff since January, employs 32 people, including skilled and experienced design engineers, project engineers, fitters, fabricators, welders and machinists.

Jonathan Rollison, sales and finance director, said the company was pressing ahead with its expansion to build on the services it provides.

“The extensions are based on customer demand and will allow us to significantly extend our service capabilities,” he said. “Our vision is to be recognised in the UK and Europe for our dedication to providing one point of contact for value engineered products and services.”

He said the installation of a new CNC bed milling machine has significantly increased its milling capacity and capability for machining metal products, fabrications and plates.

It enables the production of complex shapes and will allow the company to explore new opportunities for its technology and expertise.

Point Engineering, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, works primarily in four key areas: bespoke engineering, equipment manufacture, site works services, and specialist doors and hatches.

Steve Norton, managing director, said: “This success is the culmination of a decade of thoughtful planning and hard work.

“We’ve always held the belief that it’s the people that make a business and we have achieved success through working closely with customers to find solutions to complex engineering challenges. Ten years on, we still have the same philosophy as we embark on an ambitious and exciting expansion programme.

“The success of the business is testament to the people who work in it and continue to do so.”

Point Engineering is a member of Team Humber Marine Alliance, of which Jonathan Rollison is a board director.
