Manufacturing sector revived by strong domestic spending

ENGINEERING giant Rolls-Royce is spearheading the next generation of manufacturing in South Yorkshire.

The defence group plans a vast turbine factory at South Yorkshire’s Advanced Manufacturing Park. It recently exchanged contracts with Harworth Estates, the property arm of UK Coal, to build a 165,000 sq ft factory on a 17.4-acre site at Waverley, near Rotherham and Sheffield.

The 710-acre Waverley site was once the former Orgreave surface mine and coking plant, and is part of the Sheffield City Region Enterprise Zone.

The engineering giant already has a research plant on the site, its Factory of the Future.

Rolls-Royce says it has yet to decide when work will start at Waverley.
