Martek to help protect Canada Navy

A YORKSHIRE manufacturer will soon protect members of the Canadian Navy from deadly gases.

Martek Marine, which makes environmental and safety monitoring technology for shipping, has signed a contract for an undisclosed sum to provide the Canadian Navy with gas detection systems.

The deal will see Rotherham-based Martek supply 12 MM2000 marine gas detection systems, which can detect deadly hydrogen sulphide gas.

The systems will be used by the Canadian Navy's fleet of Halifax-class multi-role patrol frigates based in Victoria, British Columbia, and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

It is Martek's first contract with the Canadian Navy. The hydrogen sulphide monitoring technology will be fitted on the Halifax-class ships while they are in port over the next year.

Martek's turnover for the year to February 2010 was 4.8m. The company's turnover is expected to have reached 6.1m by February 2011. The company has also taken on 14 extra staff since the beginning of 2010, bringing its total workforce to 47 employees.
