Mayor writes in anger at energy snub

ENERGY minister Ed Davey has been challenged to explain his reasons for refusing to fund a carbon capture and storage power project in Doncaster in a letter written by the town’s “flabbergasted” mayor.

Peter Davies said he had penned the letter to “express his shock and bewilderment” at the decision to exclude the Don Valley project from the shortlist in the Government’s carbon capture and storage competition.

The company behind the scheme had secured almost £150m in European funding and it was expected that the scheme, regarded as the country’s most advanced, would be backed.

Mr Davies said: “Frankly, we are at a loss to comprehend such an act, which appears to summarily dismiss a project which has consistently been the front-runner throughout this entire process.

“This decision, if it stands, not only threatens our best chance of cleaner energy, at a low cost per unit, but also threatens thousands of jobs in an area in desperate need of regeneration.”
