McBride facing a branded challenge

MCBRIDE, which supplies own-label toothpaste, mouthwashes and detergents to the major supermarket chains, yesterday revealed that its full-year revenues fell five per cent to £761.4m.

The company also revealed that operating profits dropped 19 per cent to £24m, after a year in which it faced an increase in branded competition.

Chris Bull, the chief executive of Manchester-based McBride, which has sites in Hull and Bradford, said: “This has been a challenging year, during which we have wound down selected contract manufacturing business, while also facing an increase in branded competition, as we reported in our March trading statement. Despite this, we have started to make good progress, with our successful product launch programme contributing to private label revenue growth of two per cent in the second half.

“Although the economic environment remains challenging, we are seeing private label retail sales volumes grow in a number of our core markets.”
