MedaPhor seals US deal for scanning simulator

MEDAPHOR, one of Fusion IP's companies, has signed its first US distribution agreement for ultrasound training simulator Scan-Trainer.

Sheffield-based Fusion IP, which turns university research into business, said the non-exclusive agreement with Florida-based Rotherfield Technologies will enable ScanTrainer to access the vast US market for ultrasound training.

The simulator gives trainees real-life scanning experience in a more cost-effective way.

The computer training enables trainees to develop the complex mix of cognitive skills and eye-hand movement co-ordination without the need for an ultrasound machine, a patient or direct supervision by an expert.

Trainees can learn by trial and error at their own pace, with unlimited opportunities to practise before they move on to scanning real patients.

ScanTrainer's first system was the Transvaginal Simulator, which went on sale in the UK in June 2010.

A range of ScanTrainer systems will be launched next year, including a Transabdominal system for teaching obstetric, general, and accident & emergency-based medical examinations.

MedaPhor chief executive Stuart Gall said: "ScanTrainer's unique ability to teach the core ultrasound examination skills, without the need for an ultrasound machine or a patient and with reduced involvement by a trainer, speeds up the learning process and enables the trainer to supervise a larger number of trainees.

"We believe the system has the potential to become the world's leading ultrasound training system."

Last month Fusion IP said it was considering selling some of its promising university spin-out companies as its portfolio begins to reach maturity.

The company has stakes in 23 university spin-outs from its exclusive deals with Sheffield and Cardiff universities.

The group cut pre-tax losses for the 12 months to the end of July by more than two thirds, and vastly increased revenues.
