Media centre to offer advice of the experts to creative businesses

CREATIVE and digital businesses will soon be able to receive support from a range of industry experts as part of a programme at Barnsley Digital Media Centre.

The programme is designed to help businesses in this sector with finance, investment, copyright, social media and procurement and it gets underway on September 1.

The first session will be an intellectual property (IP) clinic by lawyer Jane Lambert from NIPC Law. Then, Finance Yorkshire, Angels Den, Screen Yorkshire, GFA Accountants and business finance support service Red Sky Corporate Services will hold a session at the centre on October 11.

A Meet the Buyers event is planned for November which aims to give creative and digital businesses an insight into the minds of potential customers. The events, part of the Digital Media Centre’s business support programme, are all free.

Amanda Lennon, regional director at Oxford Innovation which runs the centre, said: “This programme brings together some of the sharpest minds in the creative and digital sector and will be of enormous benefit to local and regional businesses as they look to grow.”

Meanwhile, budding entrepreneurs thinking of setting up a business in Barnsley may be interested in two start-up events. Specialist advisers will be on hand to offer advice during two open days in Penistone and at the Barnsley Business and Innovation Centre (BBIC) in Wilthorpe.

Up to 12 people with strong, eligible business ideas will then be invited to attend six free workshops under the SmartStart programme managed by BBIC and funded through Enterprising Barnsley. The half-day sessions, to run during September and October, cover all aspects of setting up in business from sales and marketing to leadership and management. SmartStart was launched in April and is part of the second phase of Enterprising Barnsley, a European-funded business support programme.
